Behind the name

Faubourg ("faboor") is an ancient term meaning a quarter or suburb just outside the gates of a French city. Many streets within the faubourgs of Paris retain their original names and relate back to certain chapters in the city's history. For instance, Faubourg Ste. Antoinette is widely recognized as the cradle of the French Revolution. Soon after protests surrounding exorbiant bread prices and the storming of the Bastille in 1789, the region's namesake Queen Marie Antoinette is famously rumoured to have declared "if they cannot afford bread, let them eat cake." Centuries later, Faubourg Paris is proud to offer the Vancouver community artisinal French bread, cakes and much, much more.
